PEACH STATE FACT FOR THE WEEK

Traditionally, the Thanksgiving holiday has a strong connection to gathering around the dinner table of a turkey dinner. So, let’s have a look at hunting those birds here in the Peach State.

Georgia has a turkey population estimated at 300,000 birds. While that sounds like a lot, it is actually a declining flock. Mostly that’s because of falling birth rates that have dropped from four poults per hen in the 1990s, to an average of 1.5 poults in the last decade. One cause is the loss of early succession habitat need to sustain a healthy population.

In 2024, 38,810 turkey hunters took to the field during the season. That was an increase of 3 percent from the previous year. In all they harvested 11,924 gobblers, which was up by 9 percent. Fully 69 percent of those birds were taken from the Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain regions.
